According to Newton’s second law, the acceleration of the proton is a = F/m = eE/m, where m is the mass of the proton. Thus, a= (1.60 × 10−19 C)(2.00 × 104 N/C) 2 = 1.92 × 1012 m/s . 1.67 × 10−27 kg (b) We assume the proton starts from rest and use the kinematic equation v 2 = v02 + 2ax (or else x = 12 at2 and v = at) to show that v= √ 2ax =  2(1.92 × 1012 m/s2 )(0.0100 m) = 1.96 × 105 m/s .
