40. (a) Constant velocity implies zero acceleration, so the “uphill” force must equal (in magnitude) the “downhill” force: T = mg sin θ. Thus, with m = 50 kg and θ = 8.0° , the tension in the rope equals 68 N. (b) With an uphill acceleration of 0.10 m/s2, Newton’s second law (applied to the x axis) yields T − mg sin θ = ma Ÿ T − ( 50 kg ) ( 9.8 m/s 2 ) sin 8.0° = ( 50 kg ) ( 0.10 m/s 2 ) which leads to T = 73 N.
